Our Programs

It is here that we meet the new moms and children and demonstrate how to read to our newborns.

A Ma Baie Well Baby Clinic

A bilingual team of educators visits the monthly A Ma Baie Well Baby clinic of the Pierrefonds CLSC. There they meet with families and give each newborn a bag of age appropriate books in either French or English depending on the language of the family. If an older sibling is present, he or she is encouraged to pick a book from a supply of books for older children. In the process of meeting with each family, the importance of daily reading is discussed, questions are answered, and story reading is modeled. An average of 100 book bags are distributed to newborns each year depending on the number of births.

Books and Play

This program introduces new parents and their pre-school children to the world of books and reading in a relaxed atmosphere that includes play time and lots of social interaction for both parents and children. No registration is required; families can drop in any time while the program is in operation.

Address: Riverdale CLC, Riverdale High School, 5060 Sources Boulevard, Pierrefonds.

Cloverdale Multi-Ressources

In 2004-2005, the clinic program was expanded to include working with Cloverdale Multi-Ressources which serves the families in eastern Pierrefonds. There,  community born to read volunteers have provided books for the Visiting Mother program and the five pre-K classes, conducted reading workshops for parents of pre-kindergarten classes, and have arranged field trips to the Pierrefonds Library for staff, children and their parents. We have also provided second hand books for a community book sale.

Pierrefonds Community Project

Located in St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Pierrefonds, PCP hosts monthly community luncheons. community born to read volunteers read stories to the children who are then invited to get their parents and choose a book to take home. Parents of young babies receive book bags. Over the course of seven luncheons, we distribute, on average, 90 English and French books and 8 book bags.

community born to read further supports PCP by arranging trips to the library for their pre-schoolers, donating books to enhance the pre-school program, and sponsoring scrap-booking sessions based on well-known children's books for mothers in the community.

Saturday AM Club

Based at Riverdale CLC, we pair up 5 to 8 year olds with senior High School “tutors” for a period of educational games and reading activities. The aim is to increase the children’s exposure to, and enjoyment of, books and so assist in the process of absorbing reading skills in school.
